The NBA is not just about high-flying dunks and thrilling buzzer-beaters; it’s also about giving back to the communities that support the league and its players. NBA Cares, the league’s global social responsibility program, has been at the forefront of this mission, making a difference in people’s lives through various initiatives and partnerships. One such initiative is the NBA Cares Community Assist Award, which recognizes a player each month for their passion and dedication to giving back to their community.

Alex Caruso: January 2022 NBA Cares Community Assist Award Winner

Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso was honored with the NBA Cares Community Assist Award for January 2022 for his efforts to address food insecurity, provide essential items for those in need, and create memorable experiences for youth in his community. Caruso’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of others is a shining example of how NBA players use their platform to inspire positive change.

Caruso’s Impact on Food Insecurity and Essential Needs

Caruso has been actively involved in combating food insecurity in Chicago, personally donating $10,000 to Dion’s Chicago Dream, a local non-profit organization dedicated to fighting this issue. The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) matched Caruso’s donation, resulting in a total contribution of $20,000 to the non-profit. Additionally, Caruso helped deliver meals to families in need, further demonstrating his commitment to addressing this pressing concern.

Creating Memorable Experiences for Chicago’s Youth

Alex Caruso has also focused on providing unforgettable experiences for young people in his community. He hosted local Chicago youth and families from Mikva Challenge’s Neighborhood Leadership Initiative (NLI) during the Bulls’ home game against the Atlanta Hawks on January 23. Caruso also donated coats and clothes to 500 migrants, youth, and families in need across three neighborhoods that the NLI program services.

Engaging with High School Golf Teams and International Youth

Caruso’s community outreach extends beyond basketball, as he hosted a golf party for high school golf teams from four Chicago public high schools. The event included dinner and various contests where the students had the opportunity to compete with and against Caruso. Furthermore, while in Paris for the NBA Paris Game 2023, Caruso participated in a Her Time to Play youth hoops clinic, showcasing his dedication to engaging with young fans both locally and internationally.

Continuing the Legacy of NBA Legend David Robinson

The NBA Cares Community Assist Award honors the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson, who was known for his commitment to improving the community piece by piece. As the league and its players continue to give back to their communities through various initiatives, they carry on Robinson’s legacy and demonstrate the power of sports to inspire positive change in the world.
