The NFL’s Impact on Youth Sports: Inspiring the Next Generation of Athletes

8

From creating new athletic organizations to investing in community programs, the NFL is making a significant impact on youth sports, inspiring the next generation of athletes and fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity.

Former NFL Players Creating Opportunities for Youth

Former ASU and NFL receiver Jaelen Strong has founded a new athletic and academic youth organization called 602Era. The organization aims to provide opportunities through sports for young athletes, featuring teams in 7v7 football, basketball, baseball, and track and field for students in elementary school through high school. Strong’s vision is to create an IMG-like academy in Arizona, with the goal of helping kids attend college for free through sports and creating a network of alumni who will give back to the community.

NFL Community Programs Inspiring Change

The NFL has implemented community programs that inspire change in youth sports, such as the NFL’s Inspire Change social justice campaign, in partnership with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Additionally, the NFL has introduced an accelerator program to increase diversity in coaching and front-office ranks. Despite facing scrutiny for their cultural values and spending, leagues, and teams devote hundreds of millions of dollars and countless hours to charitable endeavors and social issues.

Expanding NFL Programs Internationally

The NFL is also expanding its impact on youth sports internationally, with NFL players joining activities in Kenya to expand the NFL Africa program. An NFL Flag football showcase will be held in Nairobi, introducing the game to young people from 10 schools. The NFL will also host training clinics for local teachers and the Kenyan Federation of American Football to develop coaching skills and expand participation in the sport.

Creating a Better Future for Youth Sports

As the NFL continues to invest in youth sports, it is essential to prioritize physical literacy, embrace the diversity of sport, create a culture of inclusion, and develop coaches as leaders. By building partnerships, using data to drive decision-making, engaging parents as partners, and advocating for policy change, the NFL and other organizations can create a more equitable and effective youth sports system, inspiring the next generation of athletes.
