The Impact of NFL Stadiums on Local Economies

3

The National Football League (NFL) has long been a significant economic force in the United States, providing jobs, generating tax revenue, and attracting tourists to cities and states across the country. With the upcoming Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas and the ongoing search for a new stadium location for the Washington Commanders, the economic impact of NFL stadiums on local economies is more relevant than ever.

Jobs, Tax Revenue, and Tourism

NFL stadiums provide employment opportunities for thousands of people, from players and coaches to stadium staff. In addition, the league generates tax revenue for local governments, which can be used to fund public services such as schools and infrastructure projects. Tourists who visit cities for NFL games also contribute to the local economy by spending money at hotels, restaurants, and other businesses near stadiums. This helps stimulate local economies and create more jobs.

Las Vegas and Super Bowl LVIII

Las Vegas is preparing to host its first Super Bowl in February 2022, to create a lasting legacy among community members, businesses, and programming. The Las Vegas Super Bowl Host Committee is focusing on long-term community engagement and economic development, offering small business owners and other entities opportunities to participate in the event through an ambassador program, volunteer opportunities, and Super Bowl 58 Business Connect. More than 200 businesses have already been certified for the Business Connect program, showcasing the city’s commitment to supporting local enterprises.

Washington Commanders’ New Stadium Search

The NFL is working with Washington, D.C., to ensure the RFK site is an option for the Washington Commanders’ new stadium location. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has expressed the league’s support for D.C. to have “a seat at the table” in the stadium search, highlighting the NFL’s value of its relationship with legislators and the desire for a new stadium in the large, wealthy market of Washington, D.C. However, Congress would have to approve the use of the RFK site, and an amendment to the lease for the site would likely have to allow for new retail and housing, which are sticking points for any stadium deal.

NFL Scouting Combine’s Impact on Indianapolis

The NFL Scouting Combine, held in Indianapolis for the last 36 years, is expected to inject nearly $10 million into the local economy. Thousands of guests, including fans, student-athletes, coaches, scouts, and media members, are expected to attend the event. To ensure the event stays in the city after 2024, Indianapolis is offering new, free attractions, including outdoor activities for the first time. The event is free but requires registration, and it coincides with SNKR Culture, a premium sneaker and clothing vendor event, offering thousands of shoes and other attractions to visitors.
