Far below the surface
The discovery of the Hunley’s wreck in 1995 was just the beginning of a lengthy and intricate journey of restoration and exploration. It wasn’t until five years later, in the year 2000, that the Hunley was raised from its watery tomb to the surface. At the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston, South Carolina, a dedicated team embarked on a painstaking mission to restore the vessel.
Their goal was not just to preserve a piece of history, but to piece together the puzzle of the submarine’s ill-fated crew. Questions abounded: what had happened on that fateful night, and what circumstances led to the crew’s demise? The answers, buried with the Hunley for over a century, awaited discovery.
