Conservation efforts

The resurfacing of the Hunley in 2000 was a historic moment, as the submarine saw daylight for the first time in 136 years. Following its recovery, the Hunley was transported to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston. Here, it underwent a meticulous conservation process, being immersed in fresh water to facilitate restoration efforts.

The Hunley is now displayed in a museum operated by the Friends of the Hunley, where it continues to captivate visitors. Remarkably, to ensure its preservation, the submarine remains submerged in a water tank, a testament to its enduring historical significance.
