A critical weakness
A breakthrough in understanding the Hunley’s sinking came in January 2019, when researchers from Clemson University made a significant announcement. During conservation work on the submarine, they uncovered evidence that pointed to a possible contributing factor in the vessel’s sinking.
A noticeable hole was discovered in the submarine’s wall, caused by a broken pipe. This finding opened a new avenue of investigation into the structural integrity of the Hunley and its operational mechanisms.
