Among these discoveries was a poignant find: a human tooth near the station where crewman Frank Collins likely served. This find connected the human element to the Hunley’s story, linking the physical remains of the crew to their individual roles within the submarine.
The remains of Collins, an American volunteer, and his fellow crew members had been interred in a Charleston cemetery in 2004, alongside the early submariners who perished during the vessel’s testing phase. These burials honored the sacrifices of these pioneering individuals and underscored the human cost of the Hunley’s ill-fated mission.
