Early submarine warfare
The onset of the Civil War saw rapid advancements in military technology, as both the Confederate and Union forces sought new methods of warfare. In the Southern city of New Orleans, the Confederate army sponsored the efforts of an engineer named Horace Lawson Hunley, who was tasked with developing a combat submarine.
Hunley’s pioneering work led to the creation of the ‘Pioneer’, his first submarine, which was launched in February 1862. This endeavor marked a significant milestone in naval warfare, as it represented one of the earliest attempts to utilize submarines in combat, a concept that would revolutionize naval engagements and open a new frontier in military strategy.
