In this dire scenario, the Confederate Army saw the American Diver as a potential game-changer, a tool to pierce through the Union’s naval barricade.
Tragically, the submarine’s journey was cut short when it sank en route from Alabama, victim to the treacherous and choppy waters. This setback was a severe blow to Hunley’s aspirations, yet it did not extinguish his determination.
